TENNIS OPENING DAY - SATURDAY 31st MARCH

Blue skies set the scene for a great Opening Rendezvous Tennis tournament with eighteen players registered to compete. Ronnie McFarland welcomed everyone, explained the rules of the competition were each match comprised of four games with each players serving for one game.

Four rounds of tennis were played with many close, entertaining and exciting games. As usual, time was taken for some refreshments mid afternoon with an enjoyable cup of tea and a few sweet goodies - Thanks to Maureen Lindsay.

Continuing in dry but a little cold conditions play kept moving and eventually four ladies and four men had reached the semi-finals and after some competitive play we had our finalists.

The final also proved to be a competitive, sporting and enjoyable match with some fine rallies.

Hazel and Robin Mulholland presented the prizes to all the finalists, with the Runner Up prizes going Florence Corrigan and Ronnie McFarland and the Opening Day winners' trophies to Lorraine Heaney and Paul McCrum.

Finalists: Ronnie & Florence with Hazel & Robin Mulholland
Winners: Paul & Lorraine with Hazel & Robin Mulholland

The Ladies winner Lorraine Heaney was presented with the “Molly McCormack Memorial Cup” and the Mens winner Paul McCrum recieved the new the “Leslie Steenson Memorial Trophy 2006” presented in memory of our dear friend, long time club member and tennis buddy Leslie Steenson.

Opening Day Dinner - Saturday 31st March 2007

Having completed our tennis tournament we were looking forward to our Opening Day dinner and we were very pleased to get a good attendance for the meal and once again our caterers provided us with a beautiful dinner. Judging by the empty plates and the favourable feedback everyone seem to enjoy their meal.

At the end of the meal Jane Laverick and Alan Templeton organised a Beetle drive for those people who stayed behind. The dice started to roll time and time again until 10 rounds were successfully completed. Hazel Mulholland ran out the winner with a high score of 386, Charlotte Murtagh took the mid score prize with 310 and Ronnie McFarland taking the wooden spoon with a score of 242. Alan Templeton said he had seen some very odd and peculiar beetles during the evening and and the last prize was awarded for the weirdest Beetle to Ian Burch. (I called it very artistic). To conclude the evening Alan and Jane presented the prizes to the winners and thanked everyone for participating.

Many thanks to both Alan Templeton and Jane Laverick for organising this Beetle drive and providing us all with a fun evening.

Seventeen Ramblers and One Four –Footed Friend

Saturday 7th April MMVII saw 17 ramblers plus one four-footed friend set off from the lower car park at Kilbroney Park Rostrevor on a dull but pleasant morning. Following a rough track by the side of the river and through the trees we quickly ascended the lower slopes beneath “Cloughmore” or the 40 Tonne Big stone -- An ice age boulder.

The river track led us to a very good tarmac road which continued up and leading to a second car park cunningly known as“The Upper Car Park”. Here the road ended and we continued ever upwards to the “Big Stone” where we had a marvellous view of Carlingford Mountains across the sea inlet.

Leaving the stone (it wouldn’t fit in the rucksack) we proceeded up Slieve Martin, 485 metres where we relaxed, enjoyed our lunch and could even have fallen asleep had we been allowed! ! !. Again we took time to enjoy the wonderful view and I think everyone agreed – we must return another time.

We descended via a different forest track just in time for the 3 pm tea on the Park café.
