Pigeon Rock Mountain Ramble - 4th June 2005
A smaller than usual group of ramblers met at Ballynahinch on the morning of Saturday, 4th June and proceeded to the car park opposite Hen Mountain. We took the Rocky River track and had Hen and Cock Mountains on our left and Rocky and Tornmack Mountain on our right. Ahead of us was Slieve Moughmore and on our left, near the end of the track was Pigeon Rock Mountain, the top of which was our destination.

We were approaching the lower slopes of Pigeon Rock Mountain when the inevitable occurred - it started to rain and the "wet gear" was hastily brought into use. Thankfully the rain was of short duration and did not hamper our climb which was interspersed with welcome rest stops.

Once at the top we took shelter from the wind behind a wall and had lunch. This was a day of almost perfect visibility and we could see across Lough Neagh to the Sperrin Mountains and across County Down to Belfast Lough and the Antrims Hills.

We commenced our descent to the Rocky River Track and some keen mountaineers included a climb of Cock Mountain before we all met at the Car park. From there some of the party headed to Dromore for refreshment and others "ate locally" in Castlewelllan.

Thank you lan Bradley for guiding our footsteps.

Captains' Day at Rendezvous
June 11th 2005 was the date, a warm Saturday afternoon when at around 1.30 pm tennis players began to assemble in eager anticipation for Captains' Day at the Rendezvous Tennis Club.

Twelve players registered for the tournament and they were all welcomed by lan Burch who explained the rules of the competition and wished everyone good luck. The draw was made providing a range of different matches with mens & ladies doubles and also mixed doubles. Play soon began and throughout the afternoon we were provided with many close, entertaining and exciting games.

Mid afternoon we had our usual scones and jam with tea or coffee, very enjoyable and thank you to all who helped in the preparation of these refreshments. During this well deserved break the opportunity was taken to capture some of the players on camera. (See the gallery page)

The weather was kind to us and so three rounds were successfully completed. Four ladies and four men had now reached the semi-finals and playing the best of five games we soon had our finalists. The final proved to be a competitive, sporting and enjoyable match with some fine rallies.

The prizes were to all the finalists, with the Runner Up prizes going Evelyn McCrum and Paul McCrum and the Captains' Day winners trophies to Claire Martin and lan Burch.

Congratulations to all the finalists and a big thank you to everyone who participated in a great day.

Captains' Day Dinner - Mount Ober
Following the completion of the tennis tournament, club members met at Mount Ober and had a very enjoyable meal. See the gallery for photographs of those enjoying the fellowship together and rounding off a great day.

Rendezvous Tennis Club Member and his faithful companion make the News
Alan Nesbitt, a member of our club and his faithful companion Bismark have been along to our tennis evenings to enjoy the tennis and fellowship on many an occasion. But recently they have been making their own News headlines when the article below appeared in the Sunday Life.

THE preacher men at Glenabbey Non-Denominational Church don't mind a bit when their sermons send one of the regulars in the congregation to sleep, at Sunday morning services.

In fact, the dozy one in the pew gives a whole new meaning to the old hymn All Things Bright and Beautiful All Creatures Great and Small.

For he's a dog, called Bismarck. And, he never misses church. And none of the faithful in this place of worship, at Ballycraigy in east Antrim, turns a hair, when this eiaht-year-old mongrel takes his seat every Sunday without fail.

"He's one of our most loyal attenders" said one elder. "And, he's always so well behaved. Bismarck usually curls up on the floor and goes to sleep, while I am giving the address."

This canine, a collie-springer spaniel cross, attends church with his master, Alan Nesbitt, a 50-year-old gardener, who is also ever-present at Glenabbey's Sunday mornings.

"Alan is a faithful member of Glenabbey. and Bismarck is his special and loyal friend," said the elder. Man and dog spend the rest of the week together so, given the circumstances, Bismarck sitting quietly under his master's chair at the back during our service, doesn't give us a major problem. Besides, the kids love to stroke him after the service."

Outdoor enthusiast Alan and his four-legged friend are inseparable. Said Alan: "He's my closest pal, so why shouldn't he accompany me to church? My dog goes everywhere else with me, so I can't leave him outside when I go to pray. He enjoys going to church -and I'm sure he likes the songs we sing."

Congratulations Alan and Bismark

President's Day - 21 August
The Second Annual President's Day Tennis tournament took place on Saturday 6th August and, similar to Captains' Day, twelve players participated. A series of mixed, ladies and gents were played with each match consisting of five games.

The weather was again kind to us and three rounds were successfully completed with many close, entertaining and exciting games. Mid afternoon we had our usual scones and jam with tea or coffee, very enjoyable and thank you to all who helped in the preparation of these refreshments.

This year it was decided that the top eight players with the highest scores would progress to the semi-finals and playing the first team to reach six games we soon had our finalists. The final matched last year's winner Ronnie McFarland and Paul McCrum against Hilary Jewhurst & lan Burch. As you would expect the game was competitive, sporting and enjoyable and after a hard fought match Ronnie & Paul were victorious.

After the tournament was over, everyone retired to the Knockbreda Parish minor hall for a bite to eat. An excellent buffet was provided by members of the club supplying plenty of savory and sweet delights.

A very special trophy was presented to the winners, The Molly McConnack Memorial Cup, in memory of Molly McCormack who has been a member of the Rendezvous Tennis Club for many years. Robin Mulholland, Club President, presented the trophy to the winners Paul and Ronnie and the Runner Up prize to Hilary and lan.

See photos in the gallery section.

Thank you to everyone who contributed to a great day.
