Tennis Club Newsletter
Dear
Member,
Hello
everyone and welcome to the fourth and final Newsletter of 2005.
The winter nights are upon us once again and the electric blanket
has just been put back on the bed.
Thank
you one or two individuals who have submitted articles for your
Newsletter but generally response has been poor. Remember this is
your way of getting other members in touch with what is happening
within the club and it needs a wide range of input to keep it interesting
and informative.
For
sending me any information or photographs that you want included
in the Newsletter and on our web site we now have are own dedicated
e mail address : newsletter@rendezvoustennis.net
Many
thanks

Tennis
Closing Day Tournament
Fifteen players turned out to play for the closing day tournament,
9 gents and 6 ladies, a slight improvement on previous captains`
and presidents` days. The weather was mainly dry however tennis
play was difficult due to the persistent gusting wind.
Nevertheless
the tournament proceeded with those who did come along and three
rounds took place before we reached the four top players gents and
ladies with the highest scores.
A
welcome break during proceedings was provided by Maureen Lindsay
who provided light refreshments namely scones and cakes for all
the players -many thanks for a job well done.
The
semi finals took place between Peter Shields and Florence Corrigan
against Gordon Buchannon and Evelyn McCrum, with Gordon and Evelyn
eventually winning a close run contest by 6 games to 4.
The
other semi final took place between Denis Moore and Susan McFarland
against Paul McCrum and Hilary Jewhurst, with Paul and Hilary also
winning by a 6 games to 4 margin.
The
weather began to close in at this stage and the final commenced
with conditions becoming worse for the players.
Despite
this the final between Paul and Hilary against Gordon and Evelyn
went ahead possibly the first occasion when mother has played against
son in the final of any Rendezvous tournament.
Eventually
Paul and Hilary ran out winners, congratulations to them and commiserations
to Gordon and Evelyn, son gaining the upper hand on this occasion!!
As
Hilary was the only one staying for the dinner Ronnie McFarland
presented the prizes to all finalists at the conclusion of the match.

Closing
Day Dinner
Following
a great day's tennis, eighteen people arrived for the closing day
dinner which commenced at 6.30pm. Once again the meal that was provided
by the caterers was of a very high standard.
At the end of the meal Alan Templeton organised a Beetle drive for
those people who stayed behind. After 10 rounds Greta Copes ran
out the winner with a score of 383 with Irene McAvoy taking the
wooden spoon with a score of 285. Two players tied for the closest
score to the mid position between the top and bottom scores namely
Edith Deering and Robin Mulholland both with scores of 331-Robin
doing the gentlemanly thing by conceding to Edith. Prizes were then
given to Greta, Irene and Edith by Jane Laverick. Many thanks to
both Alan Templeton and Jane Laverick for their Beetle drive expertise.
The day ended at approximately 9.45pm.
Many thanks to all who came along to make it another enjoyable days
play followed by a most enjoyable meal together with the entertainment.
October
Ramble to Ballygally / Robin Young Hill
Saturday
1st October 12 walkers met at Ballygally and proceeded to Robin
Young Hill which we walked up but !!!! WET, WET, weather forced
a retreat downhill where lunch was enjoyed in the cars.
Following
a brief discussion it was agreed we would return to Ballygally and
walk through the forest to Carnfunnock . The rain did stop and on
reaching the country park the priority was to rearrange the furniture
in the café and enjoy the leisurely cuppa, where the few
non-energetic walkers who chose to travel by car rather that walk
eventually found us.
We
tried to get rid of a few unwanted bodies by directing them into
the maze but alas they quickly found the exit and a return trip
through the forest soon had us back in Ballygally where we were
reunited with our cars.
In
spite of the rain and change of plans we did have an enjoyable day.
